I’ve noticed people conflating these two things, which is understandable! Shimejis are far more common among the English side of thing since they’re a lot easier to do, but they aren’t the same thing, haha.
A Shimeji is basically a tiny app that lets a small character crawl around your screen. These characters are fairly limited in their complexity and their behaviors (usually, cough). They will climb the sides and top of your monitor and certain windows, they’ll kick windows, they’ll sit and crawl around, they’ll reproduce themselves, and you can pick them up and toss them around.
Almost all Shimejis share the same coding, but use different images for the character. To make a shimeji in fact, all you have to do is replace the existing image files with your own. Very simple! While you can add new animations if you understand Shimeji coding, you can’t add entirely new functions to a shimeji very easily. Shimejis can’t interact with each other either, and aside from picking one up, you can’t really interact with them yourself.
Since shimejis are generally easy to make, there are lots of them! They’re pretty popular on the English side of things, I think. I’ve made a few myself - ZombieHunter, ZombieSmoker, a joint Hunter/Smoker, Duster, and a cat one. I’m pretty sure I saw an app that lets you have shimejis on your phone too… although, that app also stole my cat shimeji without credit… and charged money for it…………
An Ukagaka, or Nanika, or Ghost (they go by a lot of names), is a much more complex and much more customizable character, therefore they can take on many different forms that can do different things. Basically you have a base app (SSP, most likely) and then you use that app to run your Ghosts. The Ghost most western fandomers would probably have seen would be FLELE, a little music player. I’ve seen a fair amount of different FLELE shells in English! Including a Flowey one (spoilers), hehe. I also made a Jockey and Gordon Freeman FLELE shell, and an English patch for FLELE as well.
Boyfriend To Death Shimeji
Much like Shimejis above, a FLELE has the same base coding, but with different images for each character (a “shell”). But a FLELE is just one single type of Ghost, specialized for playing music. Ghosts are actually fully customizable to do almost anything you want! Provided you know how to code them to do it.
Ghosts can be one, two, or even three characters at once! You can pet, hit, or interact with Ghosts in multiple places on their bodies depending on how each one is set up. You can also pick them up and move them around. The Ghost will talk to you randomly (or their partner, if they have a partner) as they hang out on your desktop, ask you questions, or possibly play games with you. They can have individualized menus, with customized options you can use to talk with or interact with them. They can do things like empty your recycle bin, check your mail, fix your clock, play music (as with FLELE above)… it really comes down to what the Ghost’s coder wanted them to do! I’ve seen Ghosts that can play games of Triple Triad from FF8 even…
Because Ghosts are so customizable, it’s hard to say definitively what they all do, because their features might change between Ghosts. However, aside from FLELE, Ghosts aren’t at all common on the English side of things, primarily because (from my searching way back when anyway) there just weren’t any Ghosts IN English. And unlike Shimejis, Ghosts are VERY text intensive, so if you can’t understand the language, you’re not going to get much out of them. I spent a LOT of time and effort writing up a tutorial site about how to create a Ghost in English in hopes that they’ll take off more on the English side of things, although that hasn’t really happened yet… but I remain hopeful! They are admittedly a lot harder to make than a Shimeji, but…
If you want to get an idea of what a Ghost is like and what they can do, you can download my HunterSmoker Ghost and play with them for a while. They have lots of features I added as I figured out how Ghost coding worked! I’m really very proud of them, haha. Gaster isn’t going to be that complex in some ways… but he’ll have his own specialized features when all’s said and done. I’ve also reblogged Ghosts as I’ve found them to my “ukagaka” tag, so you can look through those Ghosts too. There are Sans and Papyrus Ghosts for example, and a Sam & Max Ghost, and an Ichimatsu Ghost. I LOVE Ghosts (if you can’t tell), so if you’ve made one or you’ve found one I don’t know about, please let me know! I just think they’re so cool…
